This looks at a number of medium sized cities – up to 1.2m in population and looks at how their economic performance has been turned around.

CITIES AND SUSTAINABILITY

The Economic Case for Low Carbon Cities Stockholm Environment Institute, NCER (December 2014).  ‘Lead author Professor Andrew Gouldson of the University of Bristol said: “A low-carbon economy is a no-brainer from an economic point of view, as well as an environmental one. By implementing a range of low-carbon measures, cities could bring in billions of dollars of investments that would completely pay for themselves while delivering carbon savings of up to 34% of global energy-related emissions.’

CITIES AND LEADERSHIP

A OECD LEED study on Local Economic Leadership July 2015 (Download here) which focusses on Amsterdam, Hamburg, Manchester and Stockholm. This looks at the challenges of current day city leadership including lack of powers/funding/  lack of correspondence of administrative boundaries with functional economic areas and the need for a more encompassing leadership to include a range of partners.
