Birmingham Arts and Culture Summit

Tomorrow an important summit with national and international speakers kicks off on the role of the Arts and the Cultural sector in Birmingham’s economy. During the 1990’s Birmingham invested heavily in this sector with the BRB, the Hippodrome and Symphony Hall being some of the investments but the pace of this investment has slackened in recent years. This is an important event to discuss what is their importance and what can be done to boost their role. http://birminghamculture.org/arts-culture-summit-2012

  1. My small ‘issue’ with such events is that they- of themselves- become the ‘spectacle’. Lots and lots of people speaking, selling their ‘bag’ – breezing in and out of the ‘conference’/ the city. A hierarchy of importance: where the audience nod their heads. Good, important events, nevertheless.
What to do when money for arts/ culture is not an easy answer.

  2. I agree this should not be the show, it should lead to considered thought and action. It will be tough but it is necessary to ask questions and plan responses.
